Called the Green Island, Thassos is a real slice of paradise – with olive groves, pines, cypress trees and evergreen shrubs. On the island itself there are several settlements with holiday houses and beautiful sea views. Whichever you choose, you won’t make a mistake. Distances are small, nature is beautiful, so you can indulge in leisurely walks without purpose and direction.
However, don’t miss to see two of the most beautiful Greek monasteries, which are located on the island of Thassos-“Saint Panteleimon Prinos”, that is placed among the lush vegetation of Mount Ipsario, and “Archangel Michael”, located about 20 km from the main town Limenas on the way to Alyki. Limenas is the colloquial name of the island’s capital, whose official name is Thassos too. The full name “Limenas Tasu” actually means “port of Thassos” and was introduced to distinguish the island from the city. There are also many nice restaurants in limenas(ports) with a delicious sea food.
Another interesting town is Limenaria, where there is a small museum of folk crafts. There is also a small sandy beach in the town itself. Thassos offers all possibilities for summer entertainment – boat trips, scuba diving, water sports. You can also explore the island’s hills with ATVS, ride a mountain bike or join in the olive-growing.
An integral part of the holiday of Thassos is the local cuisine. Try the incredibly delicious olives and olive oil produced on the island Honey, freshly caught fish and seafood, as well as tempting Greek pastries. And with a glass of wine and a view of the sea your dinner will be more than divine.
The beaches you must go to, you will see on the Internet. Basically where you notice the signboard on the Beach Road – you go! There are also a few secret beaches that you can visit by boat because they are hard to find by car. The beaches are pebbly, so wear shoes.
Thassos can be reached quickly and easily from the port of Keramoti, where there are often ferries until late in the evening, and the journey takes about 30-40 minutes.
